Leadership has always been a profound passion of mine, ignited by encounters with realized masters and spiritual gurus from diverse corners of the world. Their wisdom left an indelible impression on my soul, and intriguingly, I sensed an underlying connection between the greatness they embodied and the accomplishments of exceptional leaders in the professional world.

As someone who has had the privilege of spending time with these luminaries, I have always known that the blueprint to greatness is universal — a formula that transcends boundaries and empowers individuals to achieve remarkable success and magnificence. Whether in the spiritual realm or the corporate world, greatness is not a privilege reserved for a select few. It is something that anyone can attain by embracing timeless principles of leadership and self-discovery.

In my pursuit of understanding this formula, I recently found myself in an extraordinary opportunity, shadowing a true legend, our esteemed CEO, affectionately referred to as “Chief,” for an entire day. His accomplishments go beyond any seasoned CEO; he is a legend and a visionary who has achieved the extraordinary and is globally recognized for his incredible contributions to the nation. His extraordinary day was a symphony of purpose, with over 20 meetings, 5 crucial calls, lunch with foreign ministers, and site visits — all orchestrated between 10 am to 8:30 pm. In Chief, I find a bridge between the spiritual principles I have learned and the leadership prowess I seek to understand.

The Power of Vision and Sacrifice

“To reach the moon, you should be willing to be burnt on earth. You should be willing to face the risk of fire — the risk of the sky,” Chief’s poignant quote echoed in my mind as I observed him starting his day with an unwavering focus on the greater vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. From the early hours of the morning until the day’s end, Chief’s unwavering commitment to the greater good was a constant presence. He poured every ounce of his energy into leading and guiding his team, ensuring that not a single moment was squandered on trivial matters. Instead, he directed every action and decision towards advancing the organization’s goals. He let his coffee grow cold, putting the vision ahead of personal comforts embodying the true essence of leadership as a form of sacred practice — Sadhana. In both realms, a true leader places the vision ahead of personal desires, sacrificing for the greater good.

The Pillars of Integrity

Chief emphasized, “Our words do not make us great — our actions do,” highlighting the essence of integrity in leadership. Silly excuses were not acceptable to him, for he understood that actions, not mere words, define true leadership. When faced with excuses, he fearlessly questioned the individuals, repeatedly seeking to understand if they had genuinely tried. For the Chief, true leadership hinged not on empty promises but on tangible actions — meaningful outcomes and sincere efforts. Excuses are cast aside, and when one rises to the occasion with a determination to challenge inertia and make a genuine impact. In spirituality, the path of integrity is emphasized as a means to attain self-realization, and the same holds true for leadership — integrity is the path to greatness.

The Art of Sacrificing Short-Term Gains for Long-Term Success

“Put Dharma ahead of everything else,” Chief advised, exemplifying the wisdom of sacrificing short-term gains for lasting success. He was willing to forego immediate gratification if it meant advancing the grander vision he had set for the organization. In handling business ventures worth crores of rupees, he consistently made investments that reaped long-term benefits for both individuals and the organization. This unwavering commitment to prioritizing sustainable growth and the well-being of all involved, exemplified his visionary leadership resonating with the principles of spirituality that emphasize the path of righteousness and higher purpose. In both realms, great leaders prioritize long-term impact over immediate rewards, creating a lasting legacy.

Continuous Learning and Growth

Growth is a continuous journey for a leader, akin to the unwavering pursuit of spiritual seekers on their path of self-discovery. Just as these seekers constantly evolve, great leaders, too, seek and incorporate wonderful ideas in their quest for knowledge and personal development. Chief, being a visionary, has traveled far and wide, observing and learning from diverse places and cultures. He keenly observed even the tiniest of innovative ideas and ingeniously brought these transformative concepts to India. This emphasis on improvement and embracing a growth mindset mirrors the dedicated approach of spiritual seekers on their unending journey of evolution.

Creating Other Leaders

Emphasizing the importance of nurturing and developing teams, Chief made a deliberate effort to invest in his employees’ growth and elevate them to leadership positions. He recognized that true leadership lies in empowering others and passing on his wisdom to create a legacy of leaders who could carry the organization’s vision forward. Just as a spiritual master encourages their disciples to explore uncharted territories of growth, Chief constantly challenged and inspired his team members to surpass their limits. By instilling a sense of courage and determination, he paved the way for their personal and professional transformation. This principle closely aligns with the spiritual idea of creating other enlightened beings, where the focus is on guiding others on their path of growth and realization.

The Value of Time and Speed

Chief’s admiration for the quote, “My speed is my savior,” by former Indian Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi was evident in his own relentless pace. Time was a precious resource, and our Chief knew how to wield it effectively. Buildings in our organization materialized within a matter of days, a testament to his ability to set challenging timelines and again push his team beyond their comfort zones. In both spirituality and leadership, time is a crucial factor. Just as spiritual seekers diligently progress on their paths, Chief’s fast-paced approach ensured that goals were achieved without delay, driving the organization towards paramount levels of success.

Embracing Equanimity — Unbiased leadership

The Bhagavad Gita says, “Treating alike both friends and foes, the indifferent, and the hateful, the honorable and the dishonorable, relinquishing all sense of ownership and selfishness, such a person is said to be transcendentally situated.” (Chapter 12, Verse 18)

Chief’s leadership exemplified the essence of this timeless teaching. With an unwavering commitment to impartiality and fairness, he treated everyone with equanimity, regardless of their roles or backgrounds. In his office, there were no favorites, as he approached each individual with respect and an open mind. Praise and criticism were offered with objectivity and constructive intent, and each meeting began with a fresh start, devoid of any lingering judgments or preconceived notions. Chief’s dedication to unbiased leadership reflected the profound wisdom found in spiritual teachings, emphasizing the significance of recognizing the intrinsic value of every being and fostering a culture of trust, respect, and empowerment within the organization.

Service to Humanity — Love and Compassion

The essence of love and service found expression in Chief’s leadership style. During his site visits, he noticed two workers without shoes among hundreds of employees on the campus. It was a simple observation that spoke volumes about his compassion. To Chief, real service and love were not merely rituals to icons but serving real human beings. This principle of selfless service is a cornerstone of spiritual teachings, and Chief’s embodiment of it in his leadership exemplified that true greatness is rooted in empathy and care for others. Without such love and service, no leader can rightfully claim the mantle of a true leader, for it is these qualities that elevate leadership from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

The Power of Discipline and Proactivity

Discipline was a key attribute in both spiritual and professional realms. Chief exemplified this by ending each day with a clean slate, meticulously closing every task on his agenda. Procrastination had no place in his leadership philosophy, as he understood that disciplined action is the path to success. Just as spiritual seekers diligently adhere to their practices, Chief’s commitment to timeliness and proactive planning ensured that no opportunity was missed, leading the organization towards greater heights.

Last but not least: Trust

Chief’s profound belief in trust added another dimension to his exceptional leadership. He remarked, “Despite us, nature has a way to do it,” emphasizing the importance of trusting the universe’s unfolding plan — a sentiment closely resonating with the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. This deep trust in the universe, common among leaders and spiritual masters, reflects a profound surrender to the grand design of life, acknowledging that we are part of a greater whole and our efforts were part of a greater cosmic dance.

Through my day spent shadowing Chief, I discovered a profound truth: leadership greatness is a universal blueprint — a formula that applies to both spiritual and professional realms. It is a force that propels individuals to manifest their fullest potential, both personally and professionally.

The wisdom of spiritual masters and the accomplishments of visionary leaders like Chief converge in a powerful harmony, reinforcing the idea that greatness knows no boundaries. By embracing the principles that bridge the spiritual and professional domains, we can unlock the door to leadership success, empowering ourselves and others to become extraordinary leaders.

As we continue to decode greatness, let us remember the invaluable lessons shared by Chief, infused with timeless wisdom. Let us strive to apply these principles to our own journeys and create a ripple effect of positive change in our lives and the lives of those we lead. Together, let us embrace the transformative power of leadership greatness and unleash our potential to make a meaningful impact in the world.
